Just read an interesting article on a blog http://thelonesomepiker.blogspot.com...periments.html and it got me thinking of my tubefly experiments. As with this article I started with tubefly vice adapters and had the same problem. In the article the Eumer tube vice adapter kept slipping when he was tying pike flies even when using a Dyna King Vice.
For smaller tubes the vice adapters are great as long as you don't put too much pressure on the thread. Anything for summer low water salmon and sea trout fishing and you are fine. If it is slipping I sometimes find wrapping paper where the jaws of the vice attach to the adapter. When doing anything bigger you really have to go to a dedicated tube vice. The constant slipping ends up being a pain and as its a tube threads unravel and materials fall off. Always try to half hitch at regular tying stages. This will lead to slightly bulkier flies but if the adapter slips then you are not starting the fly from scratch again. Slipping obviously doesn't happen with the dedicated vice. The most difficult thing to get used to is there is no head angle rotation which makes tying feel a little awkward at first when used to a standard vice.
If anyone has further tips feel free to share.
